A Very British Rhythm

A Very British Rhythm is an exhibition celebrating the contributions made by dancers and choreographers from the global majority to British dance culture over 250 years.

Curated by Farooq Chaudhry, producing director of Akram Khan Company, and Samenua Sesher, Director of Museum of Colour, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to connect with some extraordinary dance artists of colour who have significantly influenced the dance world in the U.K. over the past 250 years. Their contributions have deeply influenced the way we move today, infusing our lives with their rhythms and energy.

Our talented photographer, Hopeful Sandati, has not only captured a sense of them and their stories in each portrait, but has also brought to life the dynamic energy of their movements that captivated audiences. For those who have passed away, the artist Naki Narh has resurrected their enigmatic presence in the world today through her beautiful drawings.

‘Ageless’ stands as a testament to the fact that the love for dance knows no bounds and that it truly is an art form that transcends age, color, and time. – Phil Kirby, the CULTURE VULTURE

It has been an immense privilege for us to tell the story of "A Very British Rhythm." It is vital that the rich history of British dance encompasses all the remarkable storytellers who have contributed to its vibrancy and variety over the years, and that this legacy endures in our memories for years to come
