Our creative process, mission and plans

Museum of Colour’s process is a thorough one. We begin with a research and development phase and it takes between one and two years to develop each exhibition. Each creative sector is different and requires different levels of resource, investment, partnership development and forward planning. What we are trying to do is challenging and I do feel that nothing this needed should be this hard.

People-centred curation

Museum of Colour is designing a new type of museum based on people-centred curation. We want to develop more inclusive methods of creation and curation, so that the way the Museum develops is co-created in part by the people who will visit and enjoy the museum and related live events. We gather groups of people and engage them in facilitated conversations about what is important to them and foster open dialogues and opportunities for participation.

Museum of Colour also commissions creatives of colour to engage and respond to British heritage, and to weave performance, debate, and participation into the fabric of the museum. Key to our approach is engaging with diverse audiences, inviting them to visit and explore our digital museum and also attend in-person launch events in vibrant spaces, where they can get involved with MoC through discussions, Q&As, participatory taster sessions, and previews of our digital exhibitions. We also deliver workshops so the public can access their own stories and create their own responses.

We are building networks across the heritage sector, and always partner with other organisations in the delivery of our exhibitions. Our various partners and collaborators are invited to question their processes, increase representation, and to change who curates and which stories are told by engaging with the public in the selection of artefacts. We are research focused and will undertake user research to listen to what our growing community wants more of and what they value.

History, creativity and healing

At the heart of Museum of Colour is a knowledge of the healing power of respect, shared connections and recognition. Creatives and artists of colour working in the UK today, even those who have built flourishing careers in the arts or creative industries, find themselves working in industries, locations or on projects where they may be one of only very few people of colour. One of the significant and special things that happens when developing Museum of Colour’s exhibitions is the bringing together of creatives of colour and the sharing of the history of the artists and creatives of colour who came before them. At Museum of Colour’s live launch events for each exhibition creatives can gather together and share in mutual celebration and in recognition of those forebears.

Future plans

Our plans for the future include adding a virtual space, creating an online MoC learning hub and resource library which will hold the most relevant and compelling writing on related topics and subject in one place, and we will signpost and link to other organisations doing related work, so that creatives, students, academics and researchers can easily find the information and resources they need.
